Looking down at the kid’s wooden toys on the floor got me thinking back to my own childhood and how many hours that I spent either playing with wooden cars with my brother on a track we set up on the floor.  We would have spent hours happily navigating the course we had made, first it was cars then trains and we would be lost in the moment for hours at a time.  I remember that we had lots of toys that we got that were made from wood starting back to when we were toddlers and were given blocks, and then graduated to puzzles.

These toys were handed down from one child to the next as they out grew the toys and then were bundled up for storage and given to grand children when they visited. But what about the kids of today, I wonder will they like the old fashioned wooden toys in the year of modern RC toys and PC games?

I can tell you now that you needn’t worry for one moment as the retro toys are still hold the attraction for kids of today the toys are simply better for your kids and I will share with you why. All wooden toys help children learn, when playing with them kids train their fine motor skills, hand eye coordination skills. I should mention I am talking about the ride on toys, such as pedal cars, stick horses etc.

Some of the many toys that are out at the moment go far beyond just physical learning.

Puzzles

Puzzles

The games that I am thinking about actually use the mind this engages kids to think things through when trying to work where puzzle pieces or building blocks fit.  This alone, aids and enhances development in children. A lot of the better blocks and board games are made of wood especially designed and intended for the littler kids in mind

Have you seen the wooden mechanical toys that are out today?  They are just a fantastic in the way that they engage smaller children to use their creativity and curiosity. The mechanics are simple enough to be examined and understood from the children above age of around 4 or 5, while playing with these sorts of toys learning happens easily while having loads of fun.

I believe wooden toys are generally better than plastic toys because they will outlive

plastic ones generally, I also believe that wooden ones have other advantages over plastic because they are natural and have certain energy to them. This is one of the first thought that comes to every parent’s mind when comparing wooden and plastic toys. The wood has a living energy which children can feel.

Wooden toys are environment friendly; we all know plastic pollutes the Earth every day for many years to come. Compared on the other hand wood is just wood it’s part of the nature and goes back where it came from.

Also what is good to remember is that wood is a replenish able material.Wooden toys always seem to have memories attached. The chances are when you were small you also have some of the toys that I have mentioned as gifts from your parents or grandparents. I doubt if you can tell the same story for any plastic toy that you were given.

Wood toys on the other hand can be turned into a family relic.  With any toy made of wood they offer better value for money, mostly because of their long life and because they are a learning aid.

Which wooden toys do I buy then I hear you say? This is not too hard to work out as you can rarely go wrong by buying any sort of toy except if it’s low quality. With quality toys you have the choice of handmade toys, but keep in mind that they are usually a little more expensive but will virtually out live you if proper care is given.  Machine produced wooden toys are virtually still the same wooden toys and often you can’t tell the difference between the handmade ones, only though they are a less expensive. A good rule of thumb is when possible smaller kids prefer bigger and simpler toys and smaller and more complex toys for elder children.
